Dr. May Owen

Dr. May Owen (1892-1988) was a pathologist and distinguished herself as a scientist when she discovered that the powder once used in surgical gloves could cause scarring, adhesions and peritonitis. Dr. Owen was the first woman elected president of the Texas Society of Pathologists (1945), of the Tarrant County Medical Society (1947) and of the Texas Medical Association (1960). She also chaired the TMA Council on Scientific Affairs for nine years. The TMA acknowledged her many contributions with their highest honor. In 1969 she received the TMA’s Distinguished Service Award.

Impact

During her lifetime, Dr. May Own provided financial assistance to hundreds of students in the health care professions. To continue her work, she established the May Owen Nursing Scholarship in 1984 in order to recognize and reward students in the nursing program for their outstanding achievement and dedication.
